A look back in technohistory...

"1968: Computer scientist Douglas Engelbart kicks off the personal computer revolution with a product demonstration that is so amazing it inspires a generation of technologists. It will become known as "the mother of all demos." Read on

367 Addison Avenue

"Silicon Valley is pitted with sites of pilgrimage for geeks but, for many, the lovingly restored garage at 367 Addison Avenue in Palo Alto is a draw like no other. In some senses this unassuming suburban street in Northern California can be considered the birthplace of the world's first hi-tech region. It is where the founders of Hewlett Packard got started. The restoration effort means that t… Continue

Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville

"At first listen, the grainy high-pitched warble doesn't sound like much, but scientists say the French recording from 1860 is the oldest known recorded human voice. The 10-second clip of a woman singing "Au Clair de la Lune," taken from a so-called phonautogram, was recently discovered by audio historian David Giovannoni. The recording predates Thomas Edison's… Continue

Welcome!

To move forward with digital learning, we must also understand our past. We need the context. This project is to encourage educators to take on the role of historian in sharing technological advances. With Moore's Law technology is advancing at an exponential rate. Wouldn't it be wonderful if educators worked together to catalog technology of the past and video history as it is being made today for future generations? If you are a computer scientists reading this, it is time to dust off the old… Continue

Hi Mechelle De Craene ,

You may wish to explore a most interesting site for:

Teaching Activities Using Visualizations

I think the waterfall formation is cool when the rocks fall away.

Hi John and Terry,

Thank you for joining! Glad to see you here. Thanks for the positive feedback. : )

Yes, Terry, I'd be very interested in the history of the Bodington VLE system. It would be great if you share.

Regarding teacher training in 1984, I'm not sure about teacher training back then. However, I'd love to learn more. That is an excellent point about teacher training & the history of computers in the classroom.

As a kid, I was learning Logo as part of a research project on computers and mathematics. It was fun! Although, I was the only girl the first year of the study. It was hard to leave my friends behind in class. Then in middle school, my guidance counselor put me in Home Economics for my elective to learn to cook and sew. I can sew, but my cooking is debatable. ; )

Thank you again for joining! Take care and have a great day!

Best Wishes,
Mechelle : )

Hi Mechelle. Thanks for the invite. Sounds really interesting and worthwhile. I'm not sure exactly what is required by way of contributions but I'm sure I'll get a feel of it as the community and content develops. I could probaly offer a history of the Bodington VLE system. e.g, from its origins as a Hypermail hack at Leeds University in the 90s. Did any other teachers here get their introduction to IT and computers via the Amstrad PCW256 and Locoscript round 1984? This was a minor revlution at the time.
